About the Facilitator
Renee Chua is a theatre maker and an applied theatre practitioner. She is passionate about making theatre that reflects contemporary issues. Her works are inspired by collaborating with communities and artists to co-create interdisciplinary encounters that challenge, provoke, and reflect.
As a performer, her works include Tunnel Vision (UK), Sanguine (UK), The School (SIFA), The Last Chapter (Substation), Exile or Pursuit (Inarts Theatre), The Magic Lantern (Paper Monkey, won ST Life! Award for Best Production for Young), 11 (Theatre Practice, nominated for Best Ensemble), Home Boxes (Paper Monkey, nominated for Best Ensemble), and David the Best (Drama Box). Renee's directorial works include In A New Light (Imaginate, The Art Ground), The House of Bernada Alba (NAFA), Wonderland (Double bill, M1 Peer Pleasure 2019), The Puppet King (NAFA, Toy Factory).
Renee founded Her Playback Theatre in 2018, a company made up of female-identifying members to serve women's stories. She is also with Tapestry Playback Theatre since 2006, working with various communities to promote dialogue and social change. As one of the co-founders of Cassia Kaki 2.0, Renee worked with the elderly to provide support for the senior community.
As an educator, she has taught in NAFA and Singapore Polytechnic as an adjunct lecturer as well as a drama educator in various secondary schools such as Anderson Secondary School and Dunman Secondary School.
Renee graduated from Advanced Theatre Practice (MA, distinction) in Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and is a recipient of National Arts Council Scholarship (Postgraduate) 2021. She has also graduated from Centre of Playback Theatre (Dip) and the National University of Singapore (BA).

SDEA CET-School of Playback Theatre
SDEA is affiliated with the Centre for Playback Theatre as a School of Playback Theatre.
SDEA’s Playback Theatre programmes will be recognised as meeting the standards, values, and pedagogical approaches upheld by the global Playback Theatre community. This includes aligning with CPT’s mission to foster ethical, high-quality training in Playback Theatre and delivery of core curriculum elements consistent with CPT’s approved syllabi.
Students who train at SDEA will receive official recognition of completed courses and gain a formal stepping stone toward international certification in Playback Theatre.
