This session offers SDEA members a clear and grounded introduction to what psychodrama is, what it is not, and where it sits within the wider landscape of drama education, applied arts, and therapeutic work.

Psychodramatist Sharmini Winslow (TEP) will guide participants through key concepts and basic structures of psychodrama, and offer a contained, facilitated experience of the method so participants can feel it in their bodies and reflect on its relevance to their own practice. The focus is on awareness, reflection, and professional development rather than deep therapeutic work.

The session will also outline realistic pathways for those curious about further training in psychodrama and related fields, highlighting psychodrama’s unique role as one of the few sustained local training routes in this region. Whether you are a drama educator, applied arts practitioner, playback theatre practitioner, or an SDEA member considering future steps in dramatherapy or creative arts therapies, this session aims to help you locate psychodrama within your own practice and consider how you might engage with it in a way that is appropriate and sustainable for you.

This session is designed for SDEA members who are:

  • Drama educators who are curious about how therapeutic modalities intersect with drama education, and who want stronger skills in holding space for student emotions, trauma disclosures, and complex classroom dynamics
  • Practitioners working with social service agencies, community groups, youths, and seniors who are interested in structured ways of working with stories, roles, and group processes
  • Participants and alumni of the SDEA Playback Theatre School who wish to situate psychodrama alongside playback and other applied drama approaches
  • SDEA members who are exploring possible pathways into dramatherapy or creative arts therapies and want a clearer sense of where psychodrama fits

About the Facilitator: Sharmini Winslow, BA, MC, TEP

Sharmini’s background in Dance and Theatre—starting with dance classes at age five and later running a Pilates studio—continues to shape the way she directs psychodrama. As a clinician, she works with a wide range of clients using Psychodrama and AF-EMDR (certified through the Parnell Institute) to address trauma, grief, mood disorders, recovery, and self-esteem. She also facilitates 12-Step-informed groups and runs family workshops for addiction recovery. Her passion lies in integrating movement, drama, and the creative arts into the therapy process to support personal growth.

Sharmini began her psychodrama journey in 2010 after completing her Master’s in Counselling. She trained extensively with AANZPA in Australia and New Zealand, and later continued her training with the Hudson Valley Psychodrama Institute (HVPI) beginning in 2017. In 2020, she earned her certification as a Certified Psychodramatist (CP) through the American Board of Examiners (ABE). In early 2025, she received the highest certification from the ABE as a Trainer Educator and Practitioner (TEP), which authorizes her to award training hours toward certification.

In 2023, Sharmini launched the first psychodrama training cohort in Singapore, bringing together trainees from across Asia. Her hope is to continue supporting the growth of action and creative arts therapies in this region with integrity and creativity, staying rooted in Moreno’s vision that all of humankind experience the healing power of Psychodrama.
